Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for Ynys Môn Rhun ap Iorwerth has thanked pupils at Ysgol David Hughes for their hard work after he presented a petition put together by youngsters at the school to Welsh Government this week.
The petition called for Welsh Government to declare a Climate Emergency and to communicate the seriousness of the situation that lays ahead of us in protecting our environment, and Mr ap Iorwerth presented the petition to Welsh Government Minister Lesley Griffiths on their behalf.
Plaid Cymru also tabled a motion for debate this week calling on Welsh Government to make the same declaration, and Welsh Government has since declared a state of emergency, but the Ynys Môn AM added that the petition by Ysgol David Hughes pupils shows how seriously people are starting to treat the matter of climate change.

Presenting the petition to Welsh Government Minister Lesley Griffiths, Rhun ap Iorwerth said:
“Today I have presented a petition to the Environment Minister Lesley Griffiths on behalf of pupils at Ysgol David Hughes, calling on Welsh Government to declare a climate emergency and to communicate the seriousness of the situation that lays ahead of us.
“Of course, two days ago Welsh Government did declare a climate emergency. I’m particularly proud of that because they did it after Plaid Cymru tabled a motion asking for the declaration of a climate emergency.
“At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who did it – we took the lead and Welsh Government implemented it – but this just shows through the pupils of one school in Ynys Môn that people are really starting to take this seriously.
“It is not inevitable that our planet is safe. I am very thankful to the pupils at Ysgol David Hughes for their hard work on this petition. Every single one of us, led by young people such as these, needs to do everything we can to protect the world around us. We only have one planet.”
