After Anglesey was once again battered by heavy wind over the weekend, Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for Ynys Mon Rhun ap Iorwerth has called for all relevant parties to come together to re-establish a more resilient marina at Holyhead.
Holyhead Marina suffered substantial damage in March of this year as a result of Storm Emma. The loss of the marina facility has been an economic blow, and with the winter months approaching, Mr ap Iorwerth has urged everyone who has a stake in the port’s future to unite and ensure that it’s re-established, but with added protection from inclement weather.
Mr ap Iorwerth has engaged in regular discussions with all of the harbour’s stakeholders over the last seven months, and has been involved in re-establishing the Port Users Group – which he co-chairs with the island’s MP.
The Ynys Môn Assembly Member is calling for all parties to come together and deliver a new, ambitious vision which would see the marina become a focal point of development in the harbour. The development would probably need to be protected by a new inner harbour breakwater, a multi-million pound investment that would create secure berthing among the best anywhere in Wales and even the UK.
“With the winter fast approaching and with the weather only getting worse, it is important that plans for reinstating Holyhead marina move ahead. Let’s see a new, ambitious marina plan and collaborate to devise the best possible proposal to get the marina back up and running.” Mr ap Iorwerth said.
“There are exciting plans for other areas of the port, and with the right proposal and collaboration from all parties, the marina could become a central point of any development, but we need to secure support and investment for a multi-purpose plan for the benefit of all who use the harbour.
“There is potential to see Holyhead become the best harbour facility in the country, and that’s a very exciting prospect, but to realise that vision we need all parties who have a stake in the harbour’s future to come together and back a new plan.”
