Small Business Saturday on December 5th is an opportunity to kick start support for Anglesey businesses, says Ynys Môn Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth.

Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to choose local independent shops whenever possible in order to support local workers and help the local economy.

Ynys Môn Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth said:

“Every £1 spent in a local shop selling local produce is worth twice as much to the local economy as a pound spent in a supermarket, so try to support your local shops. Shopping locally also means the environmental impact is reduced.

“Our small- and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of the Welsh economy. The towns of Llangefni, Holyhead, Amlwch, Menai Bridge, Benllech and Beaumaris as well as villages such as Valley, Cemaes and Llanfairpwll all boast independent shops supplying local produce and Christmas is the perfect opportunity to support them.”

As well as urging constituents to support Anglesey’s towns this weekend, he is also hoping that this will give a boost to Llangefni, following the loss of trade as a result of a far-right rally recently. Rhun said that he wanted this weekend to be a celebration of what this usually bustling town has to offer:

“It was a great shame that shops in Llangefni felt they had to close because of a far-right rally organised in the town recently. I would like to therefore make a special appeal for people to support Llangefni businesses this weekend. I encourage those who attended the diversity rally to visit the town again this weekend to spend in its shops and cafes!”
