Anglesey Marine Energy projects make presentations to AMs

Ynys Môn Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth this week co-sponsored a Marine Energy event at the National Assembly for Wales.

The event brought together a number of different organisations involved in this rapidly developing low carbon industry, including representatives from SEACAMS, Minesto and Morlais from Anglesey, each giving a sector update with information on investment, job creation and current and planned deployments.

A recurring theme was the need to press for UK government policy support for marine energy now, so Wales and the UK can remian at the forefront of this growing industry.

Speaking after the event, Rhun ap Iorwerth AM said:

“I was delighted to support this event at the Assembly. I’m passionate about marine energy, and the presentations we heard were inspiring. It’s a very exciting industry for Wales, and it’s great that Anglesey is such a key player.

“With €100.4 million of EU structural funding prioritised for marine energy, two Demonstration Zones and significant wave and tidal resource, Wales is well positioned to be a global leader in this sector.

“I’m especially excited about developments in Anglesey and was pleased that Minesto and Morlais were able to share their vision with AMs this week. Morlais in Welsh means ‘voice of the sea’, and it is clear that Wales’ seas are screaming out for us to tap into its potential in terms of its environmental and economic benefits for Wales.

“It is a matter of great regret to me that Westminster is holding Wales back on this. Wales should be making its own decisions. As it stands, we currently have to wait for Westminster. Wales has decided – let’s get on with it.”
